Frida Kahlo Inspired Self-Portraits

    3rd and 4th grade students are working on completing a self-portrait project inspired by Mexican artist Frida Kahlo.  

    For this lesson students viewed several of Frida Kahlo's self-portraits.  They were asked to think about the use of animals in her art and what these animals might represent.  Each student then choose an animal that was important to them to include in their self-portrait.  

    After learning about  and practicing the porportions of the face, students used water color pencils to complete these beautiful large scale portraits.  

 

 

5th Grade Recycled Material Fashion Show!

Fifth graders just finished a project using recycled materials to design creative fashions.  From yogurt containers to cereal boxes and soda cans to paper towel rolls, students used their imaginations to transform these every day objects into creative designs.

Happy New Year...and thank you!!

Thank you for a great first start to all my students and parents.  I hope everyone had a blessed Christmas and brought in the New Year with much joy!!

The Christmas concert was SOO amazing and I am so proud of all the students hard work.  The mass was beautiful and the children sounded amazing!  I am so much looking forward to many more experiences like that in the future!!

If anyone has any recordings of the concert, I would love to see them, and be willing to share them on my blog as well.  I think in the future, I need to work at having someone video tap our performances (side note)

I also want to thank everyone for many gifts that were given.  The lovely messages written on the cards realy warmed my heart, and has made me feel so welcomed here and a part of this great community!!

I look forward to a new and wonderful year!  Here we go 2012!

Chuck Close Grid Lesson - we're close to finishing!

Here are some of our Chuck Close inspired drawings and paintings.  The students have been working very had and patiently throughout this project!

In November we learned many Thanksgiving songs. The students particularly enjoyed singing "Gobble Song", "The Turkey Named Bert", and "Over the River and Through the Woods". With the Kindergarten and 1st graders we used hand signals to help us sing. The hand signals (Do, Re, Me, Fa, Sol, La, Ti, Do) create a game for the kids to help the learn the pitch signals in a fun and easy way. We have also began practicing for our Christmas Concert! Can't wait to see you all there!

Artist Study: Chuck Close

 

6th, 7th and 8th Graders are studying American Artist Chuck Close.  Students are learning how to use the grid technique to create large scale drawings which will eventually be turned into paintings.  First, each student selected a photo of a person of their choice.  A square grid was composed overtop of the photo and then students used their math skills to enlarge their grid while keeping the porportions the same.  Sixth Graders are working in small groups while the Seventh and Eight Graders are working individually.   

 

 

1st and 2nd Grade Under Water World

First and Second Graders finished their Great Barrier Reef printmaking lesson.  Each student created two ink prints .  They then chose one print to go back into, adding many bright colors and designs.  Here our some of the finished pieces.

 

The Hand "Self- Portrait"

7th and 8th graders discussed the significance of the hand in art throughout history.  We viwed images of art from early cave paintings, to Michelangelo's Creation of Adam, as well as Durer's The Praying Hands.   Each student then used the primary colors to find their own skin tone and create a painting of their hand. They placed their hand on top of a collage that represented their identity.
