Dinosaurs

Dinosaurs are the talk of the classroom this month! We had a dinosaur visit our classroom over the weekend that left huge footprints behind! After learning about some dinosaurs, we made a Stegosaurs from our handprints. The children had a blast doing this.

The letter T was added to our alphabet books today. The students learned that the letter T is a “tongue tapper” and that their tongue is placed right behind their top teeth.

Each student was able to bring home a special class book titled, “Will You Be My Valentine?” Have your child read the words and remind them to use their “following finger” when reading.

REMINDERS:

We are still collecting rectangular kleenex boxes!! PLEASE bring them in when they are finished.

Book orders from Scholastic are due on February, 8th!

ABC Games at Home

Keep learning fun at home by using games to practice letter recognition.  Download the ABC Memory games from the following links to practice the alphabet at home.

After cutting the squares, you can use these pieces in the following ways:

- Beginning Letter-Name-Learners can use the Capital ABC Cards (Download Capital Letter Memory) by using 10 letter pairs at a time to play the game of Memory.  As each player flips over the letter he or she should announce the letter name.  This will help reinforce letter recognition.

- After capital letters are mastered, you may wish to continue with Capital and Lower Case letter ( Download Capital and Lowercase Memory)recognition in the same fashion.

Adding on:

- While playing the game, you may ask your child to name the sound each letter makes.

- Try naming words that start with the letter that is played.

All About the Body

SkeletonThis week, we've been learning all about our bones!  At home, you can refresh the fun-facts we learned by helping your child remember the following points:

- We have 206 bones in our body.

- The smallest bone is in our ear, it is called the stirrup (rhymes with syrup).

- The bone that protects our brain is the skull.

- Another word for our backbone is spine.

- All of the bones together are called the skeleton.

- We bend at our joints.  Some can open and shut and others twist around.

- Our nose and our ears are made of cartilage.

This week, we also learned the Letter O and its short vowel sound.  We read about Olive the Octopus and her desire to juggle and practiced our O sound.

February will bring Valentine's Day and our Dinosaur theme! Information about our Valentine's celebration will be coming soon.

Healthy Me, Happy Me

We're thrilled to be back in our remodeled classroom in 2012!  Students have individual coat cubbies and boot slots with a bench to help them get dressed!  We are VERY fortunate to have had this massive construction project take place over break.

Back in the swing of things, we've started our unit titled "Healthy Me, Happy Me!" in which we will learn about our bodies inside and out -- how to stay germ free, parts of the body, and emotions.  We kicked off the unit with a germ experiment.  We sprinkled glitter on our hands to represent germs and watched how it spread throughout the classroom.  This reminded us that we need to wash our hands before meals and afterwards, clean the tables!

We have read several stories from the Bible, including the stories of Samuel, David, and Jonah.

In other news, many of you may have heard that our beloved Miss Laird will be heading down to Haiti next Tuesday to help out in orphanages and at Immaculate Conception, our sharing parish in Haiti. Please keep her in your prayers during this exciting trip!

Thank you for continuing to collect tissue boxes for our upcoming project!

Christmas

A special thank you to all who made our Christmas celebrations such a blast!  Thank you Mrs. Chada for selecting the Christmas songs and teaching them to us!  Thank you to Mrs. Teuber and Mrs. McBrearty for your time and work to organize the Christmas party and craft.  And, lastly, thank you to all who were able to attend the Christmas show and party!  We appreciate the time that you take out of your busy schedule to visit us at St. Francis!

We hope that everyone had a very merry Christmas!
