6K: Middle School Parent Information Night

I look forward to seeing all of you again (or for the first time) at Middle School Parent Information Night this Wednesday, September 14. The evening will begin with remarks by Principal McKenna in the Xavier Room at 7:00 p.m. This will be followed by a brief visit to homeroom, and longer visits with each teacher in his or her classroom. The evening will end by 9:00 p.m.

6K Update

Dear Sixth Grade Parents:

Congratulations to both parents and students on surviving your first week of middle school! Last week was very busy, and this week is shaping up to be the same. If you do not already subscribe, please be sure to check the Middle School News blog each week for the schedule, which is typically posted on Sunday afternoon.

The next three weeks are actually quite busy, with several important events during flex period. This means that students will have fewer flex periods to organize lockers and ask computer questions. Students who want some extra time in the classroom are welcome to do so as long as they check with me in advance. I am almost always available before and after school, but students do need to let me know in case I have a conflict.

Thank you to those of you who filled out the 6th Grade Parent Information Form. I am, however, still awaiting responses from 22 of you! I will send an e-mail mid-week to those of you who have already signed up to confirm that you did so. While this blog is your main source of home room information, it is is important that I also have a means of communication that is not open to the general public. Since I do not post student names on the blog, for example, information of that sort will be shared via e-mail.

As always, please feel free to contact me with any questions or concerns. E-mail is by far the fastest and most reliable method of contacting me. Please note the spelling of both my first and last name, as that sometimes leads to confusion. You can always reach middle school teachers using the links in the left column.

Welcome to 6th Grade! Some of you are new to middle school this year, while others are veterans starting your final middle school journey. Regardless, it was a pleasure to have your children in class this morning, and I look forward to getting to know them even better this year.

When you have time, be sure to sign up for the other middle school blogs. Unlike our younger students, middle school blogs are set up by teacher, not home room. I know that it seems like a lot to take in now, but we really appreciate the effort on your part to support your students in the classroom.

On a related note, there will be times when it is more appropriate for me to send email to everyone directly. Please fill out the attached Parent Contact Information Form with any and all email addresses that you would like me to use for those messages.

Thanks again for raising such excellent children! I will try to post updates on Monday afternoons this year, but I expect to probably post more often than that as we get this year started. E-mail is by far the best way to reach me.

8K/8McD: Welcome Back

Dear 8th Grade Parents:

Today I was able to meet briefly with each homeroom to start preparing for this school year. We will start our normal schedule on Tuesday, and I will see your children three times each day, for reading, language arts, and social studies. While all three classes will be coordinated, for this school year at least, language arts and reading will remain a block in the morning, and social studies is a single class in the afternoon.

7K: Save the Dates

Parents, please note the following dates:

• Tuesday, June 7: Class Picnic at Gillson Park. We need chaperones for the walk, and volunteers to deliver and pick up treats, drinks, and sporting equipment. Please let me know if you are willing and able to help.
• Friday, June 10: Field Day. Please note that Field Day has been moved to Friday, June 10.
• Monday, June 13: Last Day of School. 7th grade is responsible for planning the mass on the (new) last day of school. Please let me know as soon as possible if your child will not be able to attend.

8M: Prepositional Phrases and Poems

Reminders for Tuesday, May 10, students are reminded of the following:

• Complete practices 1 and 2 for prepositional phrases in Grammar for Middle School.
• Finish list of potential topics for irregular odes and 13 ways poems.
• Read through chapter 16 in To Kill A Mockingbird.
• Choose 5 spelling words.

8M: To Kill A Mockingbird

Students are advised of the following reading deadlines for To Kill A Mockingbird:

• Monday, May 9: through chapter 15,
• Monday, May 16: through chapter 22,
• Monday, May 23: finish book.

For Thursday, April 28, please complete practices 4 and 5 in the green book.

8M: Assignments and Reminders

For Thursday, April 21, please do the following:

• For our study of appositive phrases, please complete Practices 1, 2, and 3 on pages 45-46 in the green book, and
• Read Handout 5 in preparation for your final Shakespeare performances. Bring any questions to class on Thursday. Scenes will be assigned then.

For Tuesday, April 26, please read the first 3 chapters of To Kill A Mockingbird. We will begin our discussion of the book on Tuesday. Students are encouraged to read as much of the book as possible over the long weekend.
