Which one will you vote for?
Our libray participates in three of the Illinois School Library Media Association Awards. If students have read, or had read to them, the required number of books, then they are eligible to vote in February for their favorite book. Votes are collected from all participating libraries in Illinois, the winning books are usually announced some time in March. This week grades K-3 began reading titles from the Monarch list together during library time. Students have also been encouraged to read titles from these lists on their own. To find the current 2012 list of books that are nominated, see below.
The Monarch Award for K-3rd Grades
The name Monarch was chosen because of its familiarity to K-3 children and to symbolize the growth, change and freedom that becoming a reader brings. The Monarch is designed to encourage children to read critically and become familiar with children's books, authors and illustrators. The program is open to all K-3 age children in Illinois. The Blustem Award for Grades 3-5
This the second year for this award. It is designed for students in grades 3-5 who are ready for longer titles than found on the Monarch list, but not quite ready for the sophistication of some of the Rebecca Caudill titles. Named in honor of Big Bluestem which is the state prairie grass, the award may include both timeless classics and current titles, as well as books that have appeared on Monarch and Rebecca Caudill lists.
