ASIAN & PACIFIC RIM STUDIES
This week we begin a three week study of Asia and the Pacific Rim regions of the globe. Students are divided into teams of three members to explore one nation from these two regions.
On Wednesday, "Holy Spirit" picks (pull your nation out of a basket) will be assigned.
COOPERATIVE LEARNING Not an easy task but required in class and in life; so get use to it people!
You are a reader. You are a researcher. Imagine that you are a Travel Agent and an Artist! Individuals will cooperate in small team to read, research, create a traveler's brochure, and orally present information about their nation to the entire class.
During Tuesday morning class time, students received a paper copy directions guide, an example of a brochure on Japan, and a layout sample guide. Please log all information in the WRITING Section of your Class Journal. Tuesday's homework was to read, highlight, and annotate the directions.
Please feel free to download the following digital materials to help in the classroom and at home.
I. PROJECT DIRECTIONS:
Download Asian Studies & Pacific Rim Brochure Directions 2012
II. PROJECT SAMPLE: Japan
Download Asian Studies Brochure
III. PROJECT LAYOUT
Layout is a prewriting step where student will plan the placement of copy (words, sentences, bullet points, motto, quote(s), caption(s), proverb, poem(s); see layout and sample brochure to learn. DO NOT BEGIN YOUR OWN WORK UNTIL YOU FULLY VIEW AND READ THE DIRECTIONS AND THE SAMPLES!
BROCHURE COMMUNICATION
Words & Images visual presentation
Weaving letters into words and words into sentences!

Working the letters into bullet points: words, phrases, clauses
Copy = Text or words; on your layout, plan for copy by drawing empty boxes where words will go.

On the layout, place a box filled in with an X to mark where images such as map(s), photographs, charts, graphs, paintings, other illustrations and/or original art work will be placed. The images and copy should be in sync or go together. Nothing random about a brochure! X = image
EMPTY SPACE: Important! plan areas of empty space that frames the copy and the images. Nothing says a lot! Is that a paradox?

READING & RESEARCHING @SFX & @Home:
This week we are assigned our Asian and Pacific Rim nation in class. First, begin by reading. Please use more home time to read and research so that you can save class time to work on Mac formatting. If you have a PC at home, do not plan on using images that will not transport properly on your flashdrives. Again, technology is to enhance not prevent learning. You will receive more than enough classtime to complete the electronis. Also, you are welcome before or after school in Room 305 for teacher or Mac assistance. Schedule appointments with Ms. Mash.
TEXT FIRST Before you digitally or library book search for information about your nation and region, use EXPLORING OUR WORLD textbook in copy (hard bound book) or on line to read excerpts about your nation.
Review all aspects of the text that will help increase your knowledge, awareness, understanding, and information about your nation. You must become an semi-expert (What does semi mean?) before you can create the brochure.
A. FRONT OF TEXT SUPPORT:
CONTENTS PAGES, FEATURES, PRIMARY SOURCES.MAPS, DIAGRAMS, CHARTS, GRAPHS, REFERENCE ATLAS, GEOGRAPHIC DICTIONARY, INDEX, GLOSSARY Do not underestimate the power of these pages!
B. IN-CHAPTER SUPPORT:
REGIONAL ATLAS , GEO Fast Facts, Maps, Pictures & Captions, etc...Do not underestimate the power of these pages!
C. BACK OF TEXT SUPPORT:
GAZETTEER, GLOSSARY, INDEX Do not underestimate the power of these pages!
D. ONLINE SUPPORT
Once you have read the text excerpts about your nation, consider on line support. First site may be Wiki for very brief copy (word) overview and some pretty good images. Remember to click images and select "full image" for best pixel points. NO BLURRY IMAGES ON BROCHURE PEOPLE!
Wiki can help you find other sites for copy and images. Do not copy/past someone else's work!
AVOID PLAGIARISM...IT IS THE LAW! If you copy/paste, then you must place words in "quotes" and cite source. Practice paraphrasing: read information, think about the words meaning, write your own thoughts or interpretation from multiple sources. GUIDELINE: If you read three sources that state approximately the same information, one may be on the path of a fact...but keep searching for the truth!
Recommended On line Support Sites:

DISCOVERY EDUCATION
NETTREKKER
BRAIN POP
SCHOLASTIC SCOPE ARCHIVES
GLOBAL STUDIES READING OVERVIEW
We have learned to search for page numbers that pertain to our topic by flipping through the back Index for page references. Some nations will have more information than others; however, all ten nations that we are exploring in team are covered in the book. Each nation has at least three chapters devoted to the nation and/or region. As always, our book discusses the region in the following order:
PHYSICAL GEOGRAPHY
CULTURAL GEOGRAPHY
HISTORY: PAST & PRESENT
CURRENT GLOBAL STATUS: Today, Contemporary Times
AFTER THE TEXT READING
Following the text reading support, begin team research on your nation. Smart teams will assign parts to each member. All members are responsible for the final work. The Brochure receives a group grade because the final project not only assesses the learning and knowledge you gained, but how well you worked together. Oral presentations receive an individual grade.
As a team and as individual's get the facts that relate to each section of the brochure. As a team, imagine that you are 21st Century travel agents. Your job: sale your nation to the public! Your brochure is to educate, guide, and inspire your reader to visit your nation a.s.a.p!
