Summer Math Skills

I highly suggest that your child keep up with his/her math skills throughout the summer by purchasing a "Summer Math Skills Sharpener" book.  It is designed to be used 3 days per week for 10 weeks.  Solution pages are provided at the back of the book.  Mixed concepts are presented on each page, ensuring that all skills are reinforced.  Students can order the book for the math course that they just completed or work ahead for the following school year.  Registration is taken by phone at (800) 411-8186. 

6th Grade Math Test

The 6th graders will be taking their Chapter 6 math test on Wednesday, January 11.  They are working on a practice test tonight which we will go over together in class.  They are required to complete 30 Classzone problems from Chapter 6 tomorrow night.  The test will not cover lesson 6.  They are expected to study their notes/examples from class.  We have now completed integers and will be moving onto Geometry.

6th Grade Math

The 6th grade has just finished adding and subtracting positive and negative integers.  We will conclude our integer unit with lessons on multiplying and dividing integers next week.  Please encourage your child to continue to practice this type of problem by making up problems for them to solve (such as -12 + -8).  They can even make up a problem for you.  Any opportunity to discuss the use of negative numbers in the real world is also highly encouraged.

6th Grade Math

The 6th graders will be taking the "Iowa Algebra Aptitude Test" during math class on Wednesday and Thursday of this week.  This is a test that New Trier uses in order to determine if a 6th grader would benefit from being in New Trier's talented math program.  Loyola Academy uses the 6th graders Terra Nova scores.  A student needs a 95+ to become eligible to take another test in March at Loyola.

6th Grade Math Quiz

The 6th graders will be taking a quiz over the metric system on Tuesday, Nov. 8.  Over the weekend, they are to make an index card with the prefixes of the metric system.  They are able to use this index card for the quiz.  Converting metric units will be a big focus of the quiz.  Our next unit of study will be on "integers."  Students will understand the importance and use of negative numbers.

6th Grade Math Test

Just a reminder to the 6th graders that their Chapter 2 math test is on Wednesday, Oct. 26.  We have completed multiplying and dividing decimals, in addition to scientific notation.  The 6th grade already completed a chapter review and a practice test.  They are required to do 30 classzone.com problems tonight to assist them in studying.  We practiced getting on classzone today in class.

6th Grade Math Quiz

The 6th grade will have a math quiz on Thursday, Oct. 13.  The quiz will cover dividing decimals by decimals.  Students will be expected to show all work, including rewriting the problem after eliminating the decimal in the divisor.

6th Grade Math Test

The 6th graders will be having their Chapter 1 test on Tuesday, Sept 27.  This unit has covered quite a lot of concepts including: variable expressions, powers, order of operations, problem solving plans, and area/perimeter of quadrilaterals.   The 6th grade has completed a Chapter Review and we will take a practice test today in class.  It is always important to study the notes/examples we take in class.  Your child has these in the second section of their math spiral.  Classzone.com is also a great website for extra practice problems to help you study before a test.

Summer Math Skills Sharpener

Thank you for a wonderful year with your child!  Some of you have asked if your child should work on math this summer.  I would highly suggest that they keep practicing their math skills throughout the summer.  It really makes a difference come next Fall.  The review book that I suggest is called "Summer Math Skills Sharpener."  You can order these workbooks by calling: 1-800-411-8186.  The books are designed to be used 3 times per week for ten weeks.  It's really important to set a schedule with your child and keep up with it, otherwise it doesn't serve its' purpose.  The answers are in the book along with the solutions.  They can order the grade level that they just completed for review purposes or they can order next school year's grade leveI for a head-start.  I really appreciate you taking the time to work on Math this summer with your child.  It really makes a difference.  Have a fabulous summer with your family!  See you in August.
