We have always known the power of exercise. Who among us does not appreciate a good run, bike ride, swim, or walk after dinner? Exercise strengthens the body and clears the mind. In his new book SPARK, Dr. John J. Ratey of Harvard Unversity researches this intuitive understanding of wellness and applies his findings to all parts of our life. In his telling, exercise is crucial to a positive mood, healthy immune system, and a balanced life. Dr. Ratey also applies his research to education and how we teach our children.
Children at SFX lead active lives. Beyond twice weekly P.E. class, our students have daily lunch recess and often are taken outside for extra time(especially the younger children). Furthermore, many teachers have our students moving during class in a way which focuses the mind and stimulates learning. This is in addition to all of the extra-curricular activities in which they participate. Yet, with rainy days, indoor recess, a muddy field, a full parking lot, rummage sales, etc., our students' experience can seem too sedentary. Too often physical activity is the first thing cut from our schedule.
Over the next few months the faculty at SFX will be reading SPARK. Also, the school has purchased an outdoor equipment bin to hold balls, toys, activities, etc.; this should better insure fuller participation in activities during recess. For next year, we are seeking to rearrange our lunch schedule to enable a more authentic lunch/recess experience for our children. Most importantly, we must value physical activity as a pillar of our mission. As I am sure you can appreciate, most school days are filled with goals and objectives that teachers are obligated to meet. Although the day often seems long, there are truly not enough school hours to accomplish everything. Choices must be made. Hopefully over the next few weeks and months we can come to a better understanding of the importance of physical activity and adjust our choices accordingly.
