Queridas Familias,
Even though some of us wish we were here:

We unfortunately are not :(
So, here is a sampling of the various topics that Spanish classes have been working on during the month of January.
¡Gracías to all of my classes for a great month!
Señorita Fanelli
Pre-K
Through songs, music and movement we have continued to review colors, numbers and greetings. Fernando's friends from "la granja" (the farm) came for a visit and we have talked about winter clothing items and winter weather.
Junior Kindergarten
Concepts such as colors, numbers 1-15, and greetings are enforced through calendar time songs and "La Rana" game which involves a pretend frog (la rana) that students get to wear and "hop" around the carpet to match English to Spanish words. It's the students' favorite! The new winter words that students have matched have been: el hielo (ice), la nieve (snow), la bufanda (scarf), el gorro (winter hat), and las manoplas (mittens). We have also "unpacked" Fernando's friends' suitcases to encourage vocabulary production. Ask your child about Fernando's friends and where they came from. They have a great time telling stories about him and his friends!
Kindergarten
Besides reviewing colors, numbers 1-20, and greetings, we have been busy with some new material! Kindergarteners have learned body parts using the song "Cabezas/Hombros/Rodillas y Pies" (Head/Shoulders/Knees and Toes) and Simón Dice (Simon Says). We have learned winter weather vocabulary introduced to us by Fernando's friends and the students enjoy our Boca Beth dance-offs using current vocabulary terms.
1st Grade
We have been practicing the "Padre Nuestro" (Our Father) and "Ave Maria" (Hail Mary) in Spanish everyday at the beginning of class. Students sing two calendar songs each class about the days of the week and today/tomorrow/yesterday. If you've seen your child come home with stickers, this is because he/she was the "cantante" (singer) for the day and actively participated! We have brushed up on our numbers by playing number bingo, learned all our shape names in Spanish, and farm animals as well!
Idea to practice at home :
Feel free to point out shapes in your home and ask your children, "Qué forma es?" (What shape is it)?
2nd Grade
We have been practicing the "Padre Nuestro" (Our Father) prayer in Spanish everyday at the beginning of class. Students sing two calendar songs each class about the days of the week and today/tomorrow/yesterday. If you've seen your child come home with stickers, this is because he/she was the "cantante" (singer) for the day and actively participated! Students have learned all habitat names in Spanish, as well as the animals that live there. Students also recognize all classroom items in Spanish and drew a labeled layout of their homeroom using Spanish vocabulary.
3rd grade
Students have been able to describe their likes and dislikes using "Me gusta..." and "No me gusta..." We have also worked on explaining our hobbies in various seasons throughout the year and are currently working on numbers through 100.
4th grade
Students have been busy using adjectives to describe family members, and describing their physical features. They especially enjoyed the family photo project! I saw many families and the students were able to accurately describe hair color/texture, eye color and their familial relationships in Spanish.¡Bien Hecho! Well Done!
5th grade
At the beginning of the month, students worked on telling time in Spanish. Since then, we have also studied "Deportes" (Sports) and numbers through 1,000. Our last quiz (Friday, 1/27) was on shapes, sizes and their colors. For Catholic Schools Week, students played Hispanic Trivia in groups!
